Freedom for fission

About the site

Welcome to Freedom For Fission. This website is all about the civil use of nuclear power for electricity and energy. It is no secret that nuclear power, and pretty much anything with the word nuclear in it, never exactly receives a positive review in the mainstream press and naturally this carries over into the public mindset. Over the decades, journalists, politicians and activists have built up an image of nuclear power as dangerous, dirty, destructive to all nature and humanity around it, a catalyst for all-out nuclear war and pretty much evil in every way, shape and form. But this is totally wrong and so I created this website to try to dispel this false image. Hopefully, I will be able to show that nuclear power is not the unquestionable evil it, for so long, has been touted to be.

Throughout the six chapters, you will find all the usual arguments addressed, most notably, safety, waste disposal, proliferation, Chernobyl and cost. There is also a chapter dedicated to the science basics of nuclear power and glossary of terms and abbreviations.

To navigate the site, the front page provides links to all the other pages. You can return to the front by clicking the button at the side or the logo at the bottom of each page. The chapter buttons at the side link to the indexes to each chapter. The site can also be read sequentially like a book by using the arrows buttons at the bottom to turn the page forward and back.

I have structured many of the pages as a dialogue with the opponents.

Opponents' arguments are presented in this format of text.

And I give my response afterwards. Most of these arguments are paraphrases of issues that generally come up and as such are not directly attributable to specific people or organisations unless specifically stated.

Who are you?

My name is Josh Baxter and I come from North London. I have a first class Bachelor of Science with Honours degree from the University of Birmingham in Physics and Space Research. I now work as a petroleum engineer in Aberdeen in Scotland.

There are issues that you fail to address.

This site is a work in progress and I plan to develop it on a continuous basis. I will certainly be adding more material as I think of it. If you want to ask about anything or give feedback, send an e-mail to contact (at) freedomforfission.org.uk.

Have you ever considered critiquing individual articles?

The problem with critiquing individual articles is that the same issues will tend to reoccur so it makes more sense to simply deal with the arguments in pages dedicated to a particular subject.

Disclaimer

Except where otherwise noted, this site is my own work. This site is a private work and the opinions here are not reflective of any organisations, nuclear or otherwise, except where directly quoted. All uncredited drawings and diagrams are my own and may be used, preferably with credit. Most photos of power stations are from the database at the WNA.

Anyone is free to reproduce sections of the text of this website provided no-one tries to claim it as their own.

Browsing requirements

To view this website requires only a basic, though W3C compliant, web browser. It is entirely written in XHTML 1.1 using CSS. There is no scripting of any kind (and that also means no cookies) and so any reasonably modern web browser should have no problem showing it correctly. I developed it on a 1024×768 resolution monitor using primarily Internet Explorer 6. I have tested it with Mozilla Firefox and it works virtually the same, though there is some strange underlining problems on the front page. For higher resolution monitors, I know there is a problem with the foreground extending beyond the background image in less compliant browsers (IE6 included). I hope to find other ways to solve this problem.
